Bent Knee

Bio
A band occupying sonic territory entirely their own, Bent Knee has spent over a decade redefining the edges of indie rock, yet even among their seven studio albums, each “break[ing] new stylistic and experimental ground” (The Boston Globe), none quite carries the mythic weight of Shiny Eyed Babies. Originally released in 2014, the album began to spread through online music forums like a virus, and its unapologetically original sound launched the band from local curiosity to cult phenomenon. Now, the quartet (Courtney Swain, Chris Baum, Vince Welch, and Gavin Wallace-Ailsworth) returns to the music that put them on the map. The 10th Anniversary Edition of Shiny Eyed Babies reimagines the landmark album with clarity and depth, highlighting the intricacies that first made the band a critical darling, drawing comparisons to artists as diverse as Björk, Radiohead, and King Crimson. NPR calls their music “mind-boggling… the grandest, most expansive ideas are on the table.” while Consequence of Sound describes them as “throwing off the shackles of genre… truly the definition of experimentalism.” Remixed and remastered by Vince Welch, the 10th Anniversary Edition of Shiny Eyed Babies stands as both a celebration of Bent Knee’s early vision and a testament to the inventiveness that continues to define them.
Reviews
“Twenty Pills Without Water is like emerging from a dense forest to see a sunny vista. Maybe you could see bits and pieces of it along your journey, but you couldn’t see the full picture for all the trees and distractions. But when you finally get out, you feel like you are both home and witnessing something new at the same time. I love this album and the way it is structured and organized. I love the big payoff moments, the catchy choruses, and the seemingly more mature way of layering in interesting effects without detracting from the experience and melody. “
“Few bands in the independent circuit have covered as much ground in the last fifteen years as Bent Knee. Since their 2011 debut, the Boston natives have folded everything from string-heavy art pop and prog to crushing stoner rock riffs into their arsenal in a way that’s made them impossible to put in any one box.”
